Area 52 Project Briefing
The new Center for Science will provide state-of-the-art teaching and study space for the physics and chemistry departments of the College of Science and Mathematics, as well as soil science. Every student, regardless of major, is expected to attend classes or labs in the new building during the course of their studies at Cal Poly.
The Center will contain 200,000 square feet of classrooms, research space, laboratories, offices and study spaces and will be the second largest academic building on campus, behind the Robert F. Kennedy Library, and have enough study space to rival University Union.
An adjacent Centennial Park will include landscaped areas, mountain views and outdoor gathering spaces.
The new Center for Science will include Western Coatings Technology Center and Environmental Biotechnology Institute, both privately funded research spaces.
Funding:
$113 million: Sale of state bonds
$19.5 million: Private donations
